Google DeepMind and Cambridge AI agent cracks new rules for 11 Busy Beaver machines

Share

An agentic system based on Gemini, developed by Google DeepMind with University of Cambridge researchers, discovered compact acceleration rules for 11 previously unanalyzed six-state Turing machines. The system examined 1,094 BB(6) machines, selected 52 for further study, and formally verified 11 new results. The proofs were written in Lean 4, allowing every logical step to be checked independently of the model’s reliability. These rules describe the behavior of the machines, provisionally named “Cryptids,” but do not yet establish whether they eventually halt or run indefinitely.
