Bank overdraft: one in five French people goes into the red every month, and what if Bitcoin solved it?

According to a Panorabanques study conducted in July among 2,000 French people, 18 % of French people use bank overdrafts every month, compared with 16 % a year earlier, mainly because of rising prices. Overall, 43 % use an overdraft at least once a year, while the average amount reached 229 euros in 2025, with overdraft interest rates reaching 20.04 % and fees exceeding 80 euros per month when no arrangement is in place. From 20 November 2026, an EU directive will require banks to assess customers’ solvency and display an APR for overdrafts, including those below 200 euros. Bitcoin, priced at $82,800, can protect long-term savings from monetary erosion through its limited supply, but its high volatility makes it unsuitable for covering short-term overdrafts. Yet 46 % of people who overdraw their accounts draw on their savings, indicating that overdraft use is primarily a problem of income.
