Maybe we were wrong about blockchain, Bloomberg suggests, as perps go mainstream

Bloomberg suggests blockchain may find its place in traditional finance through perpetual futures, crypto-native derivative products now expanding into stocks, metals, and oil markets. Open interest in crypto perps stands at approximately $67-81 billion, compared to $9 billion for non-crypto versions, against a $62 trillion underlying market. Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange specializing in these contracts, saw its open interest grow from $13 billion to over $18 billion between August and September 2026, with Bloomberg Terminal now streaming its prices around the clock. Ripple’s prime brokerage unit is also targeting institutional perpetual swaps linked to real-world assets, tapping into an estimated $9 billion segment. These products offer 24/7 access and high leverage but also carry increased risks for traders accustomed to risk management practices based on market closes and expiry dates.
