Hyperliquid wants perpetual contracts on AI computing power, and asks CFTC for permission

The Hyperliquid Policy Center submitted a comment letter on October 20 requesting CFTC authorization for perpetual contracts backed by GPU rental hours, a critical commodity for artificial intelligence. The CFTC initiated a public consultation in August on compute derivatives, with its chairman stating that the US could not win the AI race without a robust market for these products. An hour of Nvidia H100 chip rental traded between $2.50 and $3.19 in late 2024, declining to approximately $2 a year later, highlighting market volatility. The CME Group already launched monthly GPU H100 and B200 rental futures in October. Hyperliquid is pushing for perpetual contracts, which never expire and operate through funding mechanisms, to be permitted for compute, following the same procedure used for bitcoin perpetuals.
