Anthropic is in talks with U.K. neocloud Nscale for a second multibillion-dollar deal to lease computing capacity at a data center site in West Virginia, a source familiar with the matter told CNBC. This second data center would have a capacity of 460 megawatts at the same site as the first deal, valued at around $45 billion. AI infrastructure faces headwinds as rivals CoreWeave and Nebius saw their shares drop 28% and 27% last month, while Microsoft withdrew from an Nscale data center project near London due to power grid connection delays. Despite these challenges, Nvidia-backed Nscale remains committed to the project and filed to go public on the New York Stock Exchange in September. Anthropic, whose Claude AI models face surging demand, has also announced major deals with AMD, SpaceX, Google and Broadcom to expand its computing capacity.
