Amazon Takes Aim at Nvidia’s CUDA Lock-In With TorchNeuron

Share

Amazon Web Services has launched TorchNeuron, a tool that lets developers run PyTorch code on its Trainium AI chips without rewriting it, with a single configuration line change. Beyond its own silicon, Amazon is contributing upstream to PyTorch to weaken the software advantage that keeps Nvidia dominant in AI accelerators. Here is what the launch means technically, financially and competitively.

Key takeaways

  • AWS launched TorchNeuron on October 19, 2026, with an open-source release planned for October 20.
  • PyTorch is used by about 85% of AI applications; the tool aims to make it hardware-agnostic.
  • Deepgram reports roughly 70% more audio processed per dollar than its existing GPU setup.
  • Amazon is reportedly negotiating to acquire Decart at a valuation near 7 billion dollars.

Breaking the CUDA lock-in

Nvidia’s dominance today rests as much on software as on silicon. A large share of the industry’s AI code was written for CUDA, Nvidia’s parallel computing platform, and porting that code to other hardware can take months of engineering work. That friction keeps many companies from switching, even when competing chips are capable.

According to Amazon, TorchNeuron lets applications written with PyTorch run on Trainium after changing a single configuration line. PyTorch, an open-source machine learning framework (a software toolkit of libraries and tools) originally developed by Facebook, has been part of the Linux Foundation since 2022. It is used to build, train and run models, and it powers roughly 85% of AI applications.

Performance, customers and early results

Performance data remains limited but concrete. Deepgram, a San Francisco speech recognition startup, says its benchmarks show Trainium processing about 70% more audio per dollar than its existing GPU configuration. Colin Brace says the company now runs Trainium in production.

Inside Amazon, the Prime Video team used TorchNeuron to build Prime 360, an AI system that reconstructs basketball plays in 3D so viewers can watch replays from angles a traditional camera cannot capture. The feature runs on Trainium and will appear on selected NBA broadcasts this season. To test compatibility across the diversity of models, Amazon runs TorchNeuron every night against more than 100,000 models from Hugging Face, the leading hub for open-source AI.

“The value of Trainium lies in the price-performance plus the fact that it is a single platform for training and inference, which improves the economics across the entire workload.”

Colin Brace, Vice President of Technology Software, AWS Annapurna Labs

A strategy that goes beyond Trainium

The most notable element may be the approach rather than the product. Amazon is contributing upstream changes to PyTorch itself, working with the community to remove code that ties the framework to specific chips. The stated goal is a framework that is more hardware-agnostic for the entire developer community, not only for Trainium users.

“The real story is removing the lock-in that has kept developers from having a real choice.”

Colin Brace, Vice President of Technology Software, AWS Annapurna Labs

The logic resembles that of a cloud provider: lower switching costs for customers while keeping the infrastructure inside its own ecosystem. The strategy is credible only if Amazon’s contributions are accepted and maintained by the PyTorch community, which is the key variable to monitor over the coming quarters.

Sector moves and financial stakes

Google and Microsoft enter the race

Google, which has started selling its TPU chips directly to some outside customers, is working on TorchTPU, a similar project to run PyTorch natively on those chips. Google detailed the effort in April 2026, saying developers should be able to move existing PyTorch code to TPUs with minimal changes. Microsoft said the week before Amazon’s announcement that it plans to run most of its AI services on its in-house Maia chips rather than on Nvidia hardware.

Decart and the valuation question

Amazon is reportedly negotiating to acquire Decart, a startup that helps developers move AI models built for Nvidia chips to alternatives such as Trainium. The deal could value the company at about 7 billion dollars, compared with a valuation near 4 billion dollars in May 2026. Anthropic reportedly examined the company at about 6 billion dollars before withdrawing after due diligence, and Nvidia, already an investor, had also reportedly shown interest.

The largest Trainium users today are AI labs with close financial ties to Amazon. Anthropic, in which Amazon has invested billions of dollars, uses the chips to train and run its Claude models. OpenAI agreed in February to use 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity under an arrangement in which Amazon invests 50 billion dollars in the company.

In his April 2026 shareholder letter, CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon’s chip business, including Trainium and Graviton, has an annualized revenue run rate above 20 billion dollars, and that it could reach about 50 billion dollars if the chips were sold as a standalone chip company to AWS and other customers. He added:

“There is so much demand for our chips that it’s entirely possible we will sell racks to third parties in the future.”

Outlook and scenarios

TorchNeuron’s success will depend less on announced performance than on Amazon’s ability to get its tooling adopted beyond its own cloud. Three scenarios stand out:

  • Base case: gradual adoption among AWS customers, with real but limited share gains against Nvidia.
  • Bull case: upstream PyTorch contributions durably reduce CUDA dependency, benefiting Trainium, TPUs and other accelerators.
  • Bear case: persistent workload complexity and team inertia slow migration, leaving CUDA’s ecosystem advantage intact.

Gains such as Deepgram’s 70% figure are reported by a vendor or a customer and should be verified on independent workloads. Market participants will watch the open-source release on October 20 and the PyTorch conference in San Jose for early signs of real adoption.
