Nvidia and Germany’s Jülich Supercomputing Centre have fully simulated a 50-qubit universal quantum computer on classical hardware, a first of its kind. The run took place on JUPITER, Europe’s first exascale supercomputer inaugurated in September 2025. Each additional qubit doubles the information the machine must track, requiring a state vector of more than 2 quadrillion complex amplitudes. The JUQCS-50 software delivered approximately 16.6 times speedup compared to previous 48-qubit simulations from 2019. The simulation provides researchers with a noise-free sandbox for benchmarking quantum algorithms and testing error correction methods.
