Federal authorities arrested more than two dozen foreign nationals in California on Monday for allegedly illegally registering and voting in U.S. elections. The arrests are part of Operation Protect the Vote, a Trump administration effort to root out noncitizen voting ahead of next month’s midterm elections. Those arrested are lawful permanent residents but not U.S. citizens, and they face charges including making false statements on naturalization applications and submitting fraudulent voter registrations. The Justice Department has also sued California and warned election workers that knowingly processing ballots cast by noncitizens could make them liable for prosecution. More than 23 million people are registered to vote statewide, and approximately 90 people have been charged with various types of election misconduct this year.
