Federal prosecutors in San Francisco have charged Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old former OpenAI engineer, with intercepting oral communications, an offense carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. According to the indictment, he allegedly hid an audio recording device inside a toilet paper roll behind a television in an executive conference room between September 28 and 30, 2026, before being arrested on October 9. Prosecutors claim WhatsApp exchanges between Alfozan and an unidentified member of the Saudi royal family, spanning 2025 to 2026, were linked to recruitment for a national AI initiative in Saudi Arabia. OpenAI stated that no source code or proprietary data was exfiltrated as a result of this breach.
