Mark Karpelès, the former CEO of Mt. Gox, is developing a detector that can identify spy implants hidden inside Ledger hardware wallets without opening them. The device uses a NanoVNA, a tool costing approximately $200 that emits radio waves and analyzes reflected signals to detect hidden antennas, particularly around 824 MHz, a frequency used by mobile networks. Since early October, several brand new Ledger Nano X and Flex devices have been discovered with SIM card-equipped implants capable of stealing recovery phrases. Since authentic devices can vary in weight by up to 2 grams, weighing them is not a reliable method to detect these devices. Karpelès plans to freely publish the printed circuit board schematics and technical specifications, and aims to adapt the technology to other manufacturers such as Trezor and OneKey.
