Anthropic’s AI Claude solved in under thirty minutes a 26-year-old puzzle regarding the parameters of NIST-recommended cryptographic curves. It established that the mysterious seeds came from an old pseudo-random number generator called lrand48, initialized with a computer’s date and time, notably August 16, 1997 at 1:52:34 AM for the P-256 curve. This discovery makes the hypothesis of a backdoor voluntarily introduced by the NSA into these curves much less credible. Satoshi Nakamoto had chosen the secp256k1 curve for Bitcoin to minimize trust in the US agency, a choice the discovery does not call into question. For users of Bitcoin and Ethereum, both of which use secp256k1, nothing changes.
