Four service members were killed and several dozen others were seriously injured in a fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday. Prime Minister Mark Carney described it as one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada’s military on domestic soil. Fierce winds with gusts up to 100 kph spread the flames beyond the base into the surrounding rural area. Several hospitals in the province declared a Code Orange emergency as they became overwhelmed by the number of casualties, with patients being transported to Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary for treatment. Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed the families of the four killed had been notified while the Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigation into the cause remains ongoing, with terrorism not believed to be a factor at this stage.
