Ripple’s Head of Engineering Reacts to AI Solving Decades-Old Cryptography Mystery

Share

Anthropic’s Claude AI solved a 25-year-old cryptography mystery in 30 minutes by uncovering the origins of NIST elliptic curve parameters. The AI discovered that these parameters were generated using the lrand48 pseudorandom number generator seeded with a Unix timestamp. J. Akinyele, head of engineering at Ripple, described the finding as remarkable, noting it provides reproducible evidence and greater confidence in the integrity of these cryptographic standards. This revelation significantly reduces the likelihood of the theory that the NSA deliberately weakened these elliptic curves when they were created. The discovery does not constitute an attack on ECDSA and does not raise security concerns for cryptocurrencies using elliptic curve cryptography.
