Microsoft plans to pay Anthropic more than $2 billion annually to use Claude models in Copilot. The company integrated these models in summer 2025 to address client criticism over the assistant’s performance, particularly in Excel and PowerPoint. To cut costs, Microsoft has reduced Anthropic spending by over 33% and uses an in-house model router to direct tasks to the cheapest available models. The company remains OpenAI’s largest partner while becoming Anthropic’s major customer, with commitments of up to $5 billion and $30 billion tied to Azure services.
