Clashes erupted between police and tens of thousands of protesters across multiple French cities on Saturday, as anger over rising costs and declining public services fueled some of the country’s most violent protests in years. The Interior Ministry reported 272 arrests by mid-afternoon amid escalating violence including shop looting, burned vehicles and attacks on public buildings. In Lyon, protesters torched the tourist office, while in Marseille, city hall was vandalized and additional police were deployed. The movement, which originated in high schools in Paris’ poor northern suburbs, has drawn comparisons to the 2018 Yellow Vest protests, and the government faces criticism over police tactics following injuries including a teenager who lost a hand after picking up a stun grenade. Protests also spread to Brussels and Albania.
