Google’s new quantum computing technique cuts error rates by a factor of 40, reaching 99.9% accuracy. The breakthrough targets magic states, a specialized resource that currently consumes about 95% of a quantum computer’s capacity. A Google white paper estimates that breaking Bitcoin’s security would require 1,200 to 1,450 logical qubits, while Google’s Willow chip has only 105 qubits. Approximately 6.26 million BTC sits in quantum-vulnerable addresses, and Casa co-founder Jameson Lopp estimates a machine capable of decrypting a Bitcoin public key is at least another decade away. The gap remains substantial, but this progress makes the long-term Bitcoin quantum risk harder to dismiss as purely theoretical.
