Perplexity AI released SPACE, its sandbox platform for AI agents, under the Apache 2.0 license on October 15, 2026. The platform uses Firecracker microVMs to achieve a median sandbox creation latency of approximately 60 milliseconds, down from 185 milliseconds previously. After handling millions of sandbox creations and tens of millions of reconnect events in production, SPACE underwent red-team testing with 108 exploitation attempts, none of which successfully escaped the sandboxed environment. Perplexity plans to expand the platform as part of an Agentic Runtime Platform and collaborate with Nvidia and partners to develop safety standards for this type of infrastructure.
