Anthropic, the company behind the Claude large language model, has signed its first data center lease in Australia in Queensland. Located near Dalby and Kogan in the Western Downs region, the site could reach 1.44 GW of IT capacity with peak consumption of 2.16 GW, spread across four 360 MW buildings on a 725-hectare site. The total projected investment for this campus, developed by Zerra DC with partners Australian Data Centres and Macquarie Capital, is estimated between A$31.9 billion and A$32 billion. Operations are targeted to begin in 2027 and the facility will focus on inference workloads rather than model training. The deal remains contingent on approval from Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board.
