South Korea has ordered the blocking of websites belonging to 27 unregistered overseas cryptocurrency platforms operating without its financial intelligence unit’s approval. The measure, announced on October 13, 2026, follows deliberations by the Korean Communications Standards Commission on October 6 and 7. The targeted platforms charge trading fees ranging from 1.5% to 10%, compared to approximately 0.16% charged by registered exchanges, a difference that can reach 62 times higher. Since May 2024, credit card transactions, app store access, and transfers to these unregistered operators have been progressively restricted. Only 27 to 28 domestic platforms have successfully registered with the regulator so far.
