From GTA V on iPhone to Free Photoshop: This AI Tool Is Upending Software

REA, an open-source toolkit that connects AI coding agents to reverse-engineering tools like Ghidra, went from under 10,000 GitHub stars on October 6 to over 100,000 on October 12, collecting 30,000 stars in a single day. The tool allows AIs like Claude or Codex to analyze any software by digging from machine code to observable behavior. Developers have used it to port GTA V to iOS, bring Fable 2 to PC, or create mashup mods combining games like Spider-Man and Batman: Arkham City. Developer Brandon Thomas applied similar techniques to build ArtCraft, a free Rust-based Adobe alternative made with Claude Opus 5.5, three months after Adobe agreed to a $150 million settlement with the US Justice Department over allegedly deceptive cancellation practices. Studios like Bethesda and Activision have already sent cease-and-desist letters against projects using these techniques, but copy protection through machine code obscurity is crumbling against patient AI agents.
