AI’s quiet safety gatekeepers are stepping into the spotlight

Anthropic and OpenAI are seeking support from small independent organizations like METR, Apollo Research and Transluce to assess the capabilities and risks of their advanced AI models. METR raised approximately $71 million over the past six months, while startup Vals AI announced a $40 million funding round in August, reflecting growing interest in this sector. OpenAI fired three employees last week, including Mikita Balesni and Tomek Korbak, who claim they were dismissed due to their communications with third-party evaluators, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest. Key questions remain about how these evaluators will be funded, what level of access they will have, and what their reporting structure will look like. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom signed two bills in early October establishing a framework for Independent Verification Organizations (IVOs), backed by both Anthropic and OpenAI.
