Nasdaq: tokenization could unlock tens of billions of dollars in collateral

Adena Friedman, CEO of Nasdaq, stated at TOKEN2049 in Singapore that tokenization could unlock tens of billions of dollars in collateral currently immobilized in the global financial system. The SEC approved Nasdaq’s request in March 2026 to settle certain securities as tokens, covering Russell 1000 stocks and major index ETFs. Nasdaq targets December 6, 2026 to extend its trading day to nearly 23 hours per day, five days a week. Central depository DTCC has enrolled more than 50 institutions, including BlackRock, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, for its tokenization service expected in October. The CEO acknowledged that the infrastructure for round-the-clock trading remains a major challenge, as financial institutions currently use closing hours for system updates and risk recalculations.
