Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said AI companies are requesting smartphones capable of running 100-billion-parameter models continuously by 2028. This represents more than a threefold increase over the current 30-billion-parameter capacity of Qualcomm’s latest chips. The new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme Gen 6 platforms, built on 2nm technology, were unveiled at the Snapdragon Summit on September 22, 2026. OpenAI is also reportedly exploring similar hardware for 2028. Key challenges remain memory pricing and battery life for models running continuously on devices.
