This week, Ethereum researchers warned that artificial intelligence could potentially break the cryptographic signatures securing Bitcoin and Ethereum “in months, not years” in the worst case, well before quantum computers arrive. Blockstream CEO and early Bitcoin pioneer Adam Back seized on this warning to criticize Ethereum’s early design decisions, saying developers “reimplemented around an obviously broken architecture.” Back praised Satoshi Nakamoto’s choice of the UTXO model for Bitcoin, suggesting the pseudonymous creator had a superior understanding of distributed systems. Vitalik Buterin recommended not scrambling to move funds to new wallets while acknowledging the need to take seriously the risks from AI-vulnerable and quantum-vulnerable cryptography.
