‘Self-custody will die very quickly’ – Ledger wallet theft hits $91M

Share

The Ledger hack has caused $91 million in losses affecting nearly 500 addresses. The Tron network is the hardest hit with $64.5 million stolen from 276 addresses, followed by Bitcoin with $17.7 million and Ethereum with $8.8 million. Galaxy’s head of research Alex Thorn stated that the $91 million figure represents a “floor” as the impact on BNB Chain, Base, Avalanche, and other chains has not yet been fully assessed. The attack is believed to have originated from a hacker who compromised Ledger Nano X and Ledger Nano S Plus hardware wallets through Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBillis. Approximately $73 million of the stolen funds currently sit in attacker-controlled wallets, with some having been transferred to Tornado Cash.
