Zcash developers plan to integrate quantum-resistant signatures as early as January 2027. This update will primarily target the network’s transparent transactions, which represent over 70% of ZEC in circulation, or approximately 11.96 million out of 16.98 million tokens. These signatures will use hash-based cryptographic fingerprints to replace the current elliptic curve cryptography (ECDSA). The announcement comes as Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake called on the crypto sector to prepare for “bunker mode” against AI-assisted mathematical attacks, suggesting a breakthrough could occur within months rather than years. Ethereum also plans its own migration to post-quantum cryptography by the end of 2029.
