Sony Pictures is running an Instagram ad promoting The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s new film featuring Mark Zuckerberg as its antagonist. The spot displays “Mark Zuckerberg will LOVE The Social Reckoning*” before revealing in fine print: “*Instagram doesn’t fact-check most ads. Why should we?” The message references Zuckerberg’s longstanding refusal to fact-check political ads on Meta platforms, and the company’s January 2025 decision to end its third-party fact-checking program in favor of a Community Notes system. Posted a week ago, the ad has accumulated over 9,000 likes, 300 shares, and 72 comments without being removed by Meta. The film, centered on whistleblower Frances Haugen and the 2021 Facebook Files, opens in U.S. theaters on October 9.
