On October 9, Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, disputed Vitalik Buterin’s warning that AI-accelerated mathematical advances could weaken lattice-based cryptography. Hoskinson argued that Buterin has not identified a credible attack capable of breaking these cryptographic systems, citing the LLL attack in 1982 and subsequent optimizations. Two post-quantum cryptographic systems, ML-KEM and ML-DSA, have already incorporated these research findings into their design. The Cardano founder also challenged the idea that hash-based cryptography is inherently safer, noting that both MD5 and SHA-1 were broken through attacks on their internal designs.
