Amazon Web Services is restructuring its cloud infrastructure to support autonomous AI agents running in production. The company released multiple updates between September and October 2026, including a reworked AgentCore Runtime with consistent cold-start latency of approximately two seconds, a partnership with OpenAI for Bedrock Managed Agents in limited preview, and the open-sourcing of Strands Box, a sandbox providing OS-level isolation. These tools target three major challenges: isolated computing, persistent memory, and permission management. The OpenAI partnership allows agents to operate entirely within the AWS ecosystem while keeping customer data within their chosen jurisdiction. Several of these launches remain in preview, meaning features, pricing, and performance can still change before general release.
