Microsoft announced on June 2, 2026, at its Build 2026 conference, the launch of Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC), a security toolkit using OS-level sandboxes to contain AI agents. The tool operates on Windows and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), allowing developers to define access rules in JSON or TypeScript, which the OS kernel enforces in real time. Three isolation tiers are available: process isolation, session isolation, and cloud-hosted microVMs. Early adopters include GitHub Copilot, the open-source framework OpenClaw, and NVIDIA’s OpenShell. MXC, currently in version 0.8.0, is not a standalone product but a foundational primitive designed to address security gaps caused by autonomous agents that generate code dynamically.
