Europol published a report on October 7, 2026 calling for Bitcoin to be prepared for the post-quantum era, warning about the risks facing wallets whose public key is already exposed. Approximately 6 million BTC, representing 30% of the circulating supply, would be affected, worth approximately 504 billion dollars at current prices. The European agency specified that quantum computers could deduce private keys from exposed public keys, but that the blockchain itself would remain resistant due to the difficulty of breaking hashing. A complete migration to post-quantum signatures, which are much more voluminous, would require between 76 and 300 days depending on the deployment pace, with no timeline set for the arrival of quantum machines capable of such an attack.
