Justin Drake, researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, warned on October 7, 2026 on X that advances in artificial intelligence-driven mathematical reasoning could compromise the ECDSA signature scheme used by Bitcoin and Ethereum within months rather than years. His proposed “bunker mode” involves moving assets to fresh addresses whose public keys remain undisclosed, since attackers cannot run calculations against hidden public keys. Drake urged large holders and platforms such as Binance, Bitfinex, and Tether to migrate first to new addresses and adopt hash-based signing schemes like SPHINCS. The market showed no immediate reaction to this warning.
