Goldman Sachs forecasts 27% jump in S&P 500 profits as AI spending carries the load

Goldman Sachs projects 27% year-over-year earnings per share growth for the S&P 500 in the third quarter of 2026, marking the third consecutive quarter above 25%. Information technology and energy sectors are expected to deliver nearly 80% of the index’s EPS expansion, with the top ten contributors alone generating 68% of total growth. Chipmakers Nvidia and Micron are forecast to account for more than one-third of that growth. Hyperscaler capital expenditures are expected to surge 116% year over year in the third quarter. Goldman Sachs maintains its full-year 2026 S&P 500 EPS forecast of $375, representing a 36% increase from 2025, with a 12-month index target of 8,700.
