Russia’s digital ruble accounts top 220K in first month, nearly 4X central bank forecast

Russia’s central bank reported that over 220,000 digital ruble accounts were opened in the first month following its September 1 launch, a figure nearly four times higher than the roughly 60,000 accounts initially forecasted. This early success comes as Western sanctions imposed over the Ukraine conflict pushed Russia to accelerate development of its central bank digital currency. Meanwhile, the BRICS group of emerging economies, which includes Russia, China and India, is exploring ways to link members’ CBDCs for cross-border payments, a key topic at the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi.
