After housing protests turned violent, Spain will tax seasonal rentals to build a 10 billion euro fund into first-home loans

The Spanish government on Tuesday approved 21 urgent measures to tackle the housing crisis, a day after violent protests erupted in Barcelona over the eviction of an 87-year-old woman in Madrid. The measures include a new tax on seasonal rentals and the creation of a 10 billion euro fund to provide loans of up to 50,000 euros for first-home purchases. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who called an early election for Nov. 29, pushed the measures through an interim parliament of just 69 members instead of the usual 350.
