Google has contracted with Constellation Energy to purchase 3,590 megawatts of electricity, approximately 3.6 gigawatts, on the largest U.S. power grid, PJM Interconnection. Nuclear energy accounts for about a quarter of this supply, with the remainder coming from other sources. The deal is expected to trigger over $4.3 billion in new investments and involves upgrading eleven nuclear reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Google signed a twenty-year power purchase agreement for 890 megawatts from these modernized nuclear plants, with the first deliveries scheduled for 2028. This agreement comes in response to PJM Interconnection’s proposal to require data centers to supply their own power or face disconnection from the grid during peak demand periods.
