Hungary’s former foreign minister Peter Szijjarto appeared before a parliamentary committee on Monday to answer questions about his appointment at Chinese automaker BYD, months after facilitating major government subsidies for the company. During his 12-year tenure, he helped secure BYD’s first European factory near Szeged and the company’s European headquarters and R&D center in Budapest, totaling 20 billion forints ($63.7 million) in government assistance. Hungary’s new government led by Prime Minister Peter Magyar since May has announced an investigation to examine all decisions and negotiations made by Szijjarto regarding BYD’s investments.
