Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works bets big on AI to modernize defense projects

Skunk Works, Lockheed Martin’s advanced development division, completed 27 AI-directed intercepts on August 4, 2026 at Edwards Air Force Base using the X-62 VISTA aircraft with real-time data from the Legion Pod. The division developed and ground-tested the AI agent in just three months using a development framework called Supermassive. As of October 2026, Skunk Works was operating 55 distinct large language models and had partnered with OpenAI to improve F-35 sensor technologies. On September 14, 2026, Lockheed announced plans to build four Vectis prototypes, with the first flight expected by the end of 2027, wind-tunnel testing having been completed in under two months.
