Ben Horowitz flags an electrician shortage that could slow the AI buildout

Share

Ben Horowitz, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), is raising the alarm about a shortage of electricians certified in direct current in the United States. Only 2% of US electricians hold this certification, which is increasingly essential for AI data centers operating at power densities of 120 to 140 kW per rack, compared to just 10 to 14 kW for traditional facilities. McKinsey estimates the US will need an additional 130,000 trained electricians between 2023 and 2030 to meet AI infrastructure demand. Google and Meta have committed over 165 million dollars toward training programs. This shortage risks slowing data center construction projects even when capital and technology are in place.
