The Ethereum Foundation launched zkAPI on October 1st, a system enabling payment for AI APIs without linking requests to the payer’s identity. The mechanism relies on pre-payment in ETH or USDC in an Ethereum vault, followed by zero-knowledge proofs that authorize spending without revealing the depositor or the actual amount of each query. The server verifies solvency without knowing the depositor and issues temporary API keys capped in dollars, existing only in the device’s memory. Developed by Vittorio Rivabella (dAI team) with the Open Anonymity Project, this protocol follows a research thread published on February 11, 2026 by Davide Crapis and Vitalik Buterin.
