MacKenzie Scott’s first novel in 13 years is being called ‘baffling’—and critics are left asking what message she’s trying to send

MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, published her first novel in thirteen years, « Last Days in Two Nations (A History in Eighteen Minds) », which has deeply divided critics. The 80,000-word work, released free chapter by chapter on Substack in August, depicts a future America split into two nations and narrated through the perspectives of eighteen characters. Critics, including Eve Sneider of Business Insider, have called the work « baffling » and noted its confusing structure, typos, and raw format that give it an unfinished feel. By bypassing traditional publishers — including Amazon, where she holds roughly 4 % since her 2019 divorce — Scott chose to publish directly to her readers. Unlike her previous novels, including the award-winning « The Testing of Luther Albright », this one leaves readers with more questions than answers.
