Toshiba plans to invest approximately 60 billion yen ($380 million) to double its production capacity of hard disk drives for AI data centers by the end of fiscal year 2027, ending March 2028. This represents the Japanese group’s first major HDD investment in five years, with the facility expansion focused in the Philippines. The company is relying on two key technologies, Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAMR) and 12-disk stacking, to achieve 65-terabyte capacity by 2030, followed by models exceeding 100 terabytes. Toshiba is targeting a market share of 30% in storage capacity, up from slightly above 10% currently, in a market dominated by Western Digital and Seagate. HDDs remain approximately 20 times cheaper per terabyte than SSDs, justifying their essential role in bulk data storage for artificial intelligence.
