Wikipedia’s page views dropped 8% year-over-year during the March-August 2025 period, according to Bernadette Meehan, the new CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation. This decline, long hidden by increasingly sophisticated automated traffic, is attributed to AI tools using the encyclopedia’s content without attribution or compensation. Bandwidth consumption for media downloads simultaneously surged 50% since January 2024, driven mainly by AI scrapers. Faced with this erosion, Meehan is calling on AI developers for better acknowledgment of data origins and advocating that major users contribute financially to the ecosystem they exploit.
