Bitcoin improvement proposal BIP461 was merged into the BIPs repository on September 16 and remains in Draft status. It proposes a deterministic and reproducible ECDSA signing procedure under existing Bitcoin consensus rules, requiring no consensus change. This standardization allows for detecting signature deviations that could conceal secret key leakage by malicious firmware. Authored by Liam Gilligan, the proposal follows the Dark Skippy vulnerability disclosure regarding seed material embedded in signatures. It still requires test vectors and a reference implementation to advance to Complete status.
