Brazilian state-owned oil company Petrobras is using the Cardano blockchain to track sustainable aviation fuel and its renewable diesel fuel Diesel R. The platform creates digital checkpoints to monitor the production, transportation and use of these fuels, with data that could support Scope 3 emissions reporting. This research and development collaboration began in 2023 with blockchain training for Petrobras employees and expanded in 2025 to energy-sector research with PUC-Rio’s Ledger Labs. The Cardano Foundation did not disclose fuel volumes covered or a timeline for broader deployment. Britain’s Shell also uses blockchain through its Avelia platform, which has facilitated over 84 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel entering the global fuel network since 2022, resulting in over 780,000 tonnes of CO₂e abatement through June 2026.
