The European Commission adopted on July 16 two binding decisions requiring Google to open Android to rival AI assistants and share anonymized search data. Google must begin sharing this data starting January 2027 and open 11 specific AI interoperability features on Android by mid-2027, with hotword detection required by August 2028. These measures, issued under the Digital Markets Act, affect roughly 60% of EU smartphones and could grant services like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity the same level of integration as Google’s Gemini assistant.
