Over 1,100 AI researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Meta, and NVIDIA have signed an open letter urging the US government to establish international mechanisms to slow or pause AI development. Their primary concern centers on recursive self-improvement, where AI models would significantly contribute to their own research and development, surpassing human supervisory capacity.
