‘U.S. trade policy is damaging the U.S. auto industry’: Canada’s purchase of American cars hits new low as Trump’s tariffs backfire on U.S. automakers

The share of American vehicles in Canadian new car sales dropped to 28.4% in the first half of 2026, down from 35.4% a year earlier, according to JD Power Canada data. U.S. automakers General Motors and Stellantis reported billions of dollars in losses linked to tariffs, with economists estimating that these duties could drive up vehicle prices by up to $6,000. Approximately 75,000 manufacturing jobs have been eliminated in the United States since January 2025, including 25,900 in motor vehicle and parts production. Meanwhile, Canada is increasingly turning to Japan and South Korea for its automotive imports, with shares rising to 16.6% and 15.6% respectively. Nevertheless, Canada remains the largest export market for American automakers, with trade exceeding $100 billion this year.
