In Her Final Weeks, SEC’s Peirce Calls for Ending the KYC ‘Panopticon’

SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, in her final weeks at the agency, advocated at SIFMA’s Digital Assets Conference for zero-knowledge proofs and attribute-based credentials to verify information like age or sanctions status without exposing personal data. She criticized the KYC/AML regime for accumulating vast amounts of data, paradoxically making it harder to identify criminals. Recent leaks at Revolut, which exposed customer passports and Bitcoin histories, and at Trezor, whose third-party vendor breach affected tens of thousands of customers, illustrate the growing risks of these data accumulations. Peirce, nicknamed « crypto mom » for her crypto-friendly stance, warned against « data maximalists » and left her position the following week.
