Ronald Spektor, 23, from Sheepshead Bay, was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison for stealing nearly $16 million from nearly 100 Coinbase users. He posed as a representative of the platform and persuaded victims to transfer their funds to wallets he controlled, claiming their assets were at risk from hackers. Total losses amounted to $15,944,000, with victims spread across the country, some losing $1 million or more. The court ordered the forfeiture of over $500,000 in cash, cryptocurrency and real estate, along with restitution of nearly $16 million. Investigators identified Spektor through blockchain analysis, digital forensics and transaction records, corroborated by messages recovered from his phone and his Telegram channel.
